How to Care for a Cotton Baseball Hat

How to clean a cotton hat

Cotton takes a gentle hand wash comfortably. The only firm rule is the same one that protects every good hat: skip the machine and the dryer, which warp the shape and are hard on the leather strap.

1. Fill a basin with cool water. Cool water protects the color and the shape, and helps prevent any shrinking. Avoid hot water.

2. Add a small amount of gentle detergent. A little goes a long way.

3. Submerge the hat and move it gently through the water. Swish it slowly, turn it over, and press the water through the fabric with your palms. Do not scrub hard, wring, or twist.

4. Give it time to soak. A few minutes is enough for a general refresh. For a stubborn, set-in spot, let it sit up to about ten minutes, and gently work just that area between your fingers rather than rubbing.

5. Rinse until the water runs clear. Swish it through clean cool water once or twice until there is no detergent left.

6. Lift the hat out and let the excess water run off. Hold it over the basin for a moment and let the water fall away on its own. No wringing, no pressing, no squeezing.

7. Reshape and hang to dry. Shape the crown and brim with your hands just to get its natural shape back, then hang the hat from the leather strap or the brim to air dry, usually overnight. Keep it away from direct heat and sun.

Spot cleaning a stain

Most of the time a spot clean is all you need. Dampen a soft, clean white cloth (white so no color transfers) in cool water with a drop of gentle detergent, wring the cloth out, and blot from the outside of the stain inward, which stops it spreading and prevents a ring. Press and lift in small dabs rather than rubbing. Then blot with a second cloth dampened in plain cool water to lift the leftover detergent so it does not dry into an outline, and let it air dry. Keeping a light-colored cotton hat clean

• Do not store it crushed.

Storing your cotton hat

Even the easygoing hat likes to hold its shape. Store it so the crown stays formed rather than crushed in a bag or drawer, and use the storage bag it comes with to keep it clean between wears and while traveling. Keep it somewhere cool and dry, out of direct sun, which can fade any fabric over time.
